Aging and Hearing Loss.
The aging process is a major cause for hearing loss. Statistically over 50% of people over the age of 65 have some degree of hearing loss. In medical terms it is called “presbicusis” and it means age related hearing loss.
Exposure to noise, heredity, certain medications, illness, are just some of the issues that can contribute to hearing loss by causing damage to the chochlea.
The chochlea is a small organ in the inner ear section of both the right and left ear. It contains thousands of microscopic hair cells that vibrate when stimulated by sound. As age progresses, the hair cells do not work as well as they used too. (This is what has been commonly called “Nerve Deafness”).
The function of the chochlea can be tested and it can tell in more detail the extent of the hair cell function and help explain what appropriate course of action may help you hear and understand better.
The test for chochlea function is called “Oto AcousticEmissions” (OAE). I have the equipment to preform this test. It only takes a few minutes and it is completely noninvaisive and painless. This is the same test that hospitals use to test the hearing of newborns. It requires no action or response from the patient and is very accurate.
